Optical Properties and Possible Origins of Atmospheric Aerosols over LHAASO in the Eastern Margin of the Tibetan Plateau

The accuracy of cosmic ray observations by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory Wide Field-of-View Cherenkov/Fluorescence Telescope Array (LHAASO-WFCTA) is influenced by variations in aerosols in the atmosphere. The solar photometer (CE318-T) is extensively utilized within the Aerosol Robotic Network as a highly precise and reliable instrument for aerosol measurements. With this CE318-T 23, 254 sets of valid data samples over 394 days from October 2020 to October 2022 at the LHAASO site were obtained. Data analysis revealed that the baseline Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Ångström Exponent (AE) at 440–870 nm (AE440–870nm) of the aerosols were calculated to be 0.03 and 1.07, respectively, suggesting that the LHAASO site is among the most pristine regions on Earth. The seasonality of the mean AOD is in the order of spring > summer > autumn = winter. The monthly average maximum of AOD440nm occurred in April (0.11 ± 0.05) and the minimum was in December (0.03 ± 0.01). The monthly average of AE440–870nm exhibited slight variations. The seasonal characterization of aerosol types indicated that background aerosol predominated in autumn and winter, which is the optimal period for the absolute calibration of the WFCTA. Additionally, the diurnal daytime variations of AOD and AE across the four seasons are presented. Our analysis also indicates that the potential origins of aerosol over the LHAASO in four seasons were different and the atmospheric aerosols with higher AOD probably originate mainly from Northern Myanmar and Northeast India regions. These results are presented for the first time, providing a detailed analysis of aerosol seasonality and origins, which have not been thoroughly documented before in this region, also enriching the valuable materials on aerosol observation in the Hengduan Mountains and Tibetan Plateau.

Local and Regional Diurnal Variability of Aerosol Properties Retrieved by DSCOVR/EPIC UV Algorithm

AbstractThe hour‐to‐hour variability of 388 nm aerosol optical depth (AOD) and single scattering albedo (SSA) derived from near UV observations by the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on the Deep Space Climate Observatory has been evaluated at multiple locations around the world. AOD retrievals by the EPIC near UV algorithm (EPICAERUV) have been compared to ground based AOD measurements at 16 Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) stations representative of the most commonly observed aerosol types over geographic regions in three continents. Obtained results show that, in general, the EPICAERUV algorithm reproduces closely the hour‐to‐hour AOD variability reported by AERONET ground‐truth observations. Although most sites in the analysis show high correlation between the AOD hourly measurements by the ground‐based and space‐borne measuring techniques. Best algorithm performance is observed in the presence of carbonaceous and desert dust aerosols. The diurnal cycle of the retrieved SSA product was also analyzed. Although, a direct comparison of hourly EPICAERUV retrievals to equivalent ground‐based observations was not possible, the satellite result shows that diurnal SSA variability as large as 0.05 can be observed mostly associated with carbonaceous aerosols. EPICAERUV observed diurnal cycle of retrieved AOD on a regional basis was examined for the unusually active seasons of aerosol production of Saharan desert dust aerosols in 2020, and during the 2023 Canadian wildfires. Results presented in this study confirm the EPIC near UV aerosol product is well suited for observing diurnal variability of aerosols and, therefore, it is an important resource for climate and air quality studies.

Long-term variations of aerosol optical depth according to satellite data and its effects on radiation and temperature in the Moscow megacity

The rapid development of large megacities, coupled with emission regulations, can lead to long-term variations in aerosol optical depth over urban area which has an impact on radiation and temperature. This study aims to evaluate the radiation effects of aerosol pollution in Moscow and its surrounding areas using MAIAC data obtained from MODIS satellite data for three distinct periods: 2000–2006, 2007–2014, and 2015–2021. A methodology has been developed to incorporate MCD19A2/MODIS data with some additional information from the AERONET Moscow MSU site into the COSMO non-hydrostatic weather forecast model. The aerosol radiative and temperature effects were estimated for cloudless conditions. The highest aerosol optical depth with an average of 0.18 were observed during the 2007–2014 over the newly developed Moscow territory during the active building construction period. In the most recent period, from 2015 to 2021, the mean AOD decreased to 0.1. This reduction resulted in an increase of net shortwave radiation at the bottom of the atmosphere by 15–20 W/m2 and a slight rise in surface air temperature of 0.08 °C compared to 2007–2014. The parameterizations were proposed for net radiation and air temperature at 2 m as a function of aerosol optical depth and solar zenith angle at low surface albedo.

Influence of the Super El Niño event during 2015/2016 on the aerosol properties and lightning activity in subtropical South America

This work investigates the impact of ENSO on aerosols and lightning activity in subtropical South America (SSA). An analysis of the interannual variability of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), Ångström Exponent (AE) and different cloud parameters using MODIS satellite datasets and the lightning activity based on the lightning observations from the World Wide Lightning Location Network was performed. High positive AE, AOD anomalies and high lightning activity were found in the northeastern region of SSA during the Super El Niño event during 2015/2016 in latter spring and summer. The Pearson correlation coefficients between these aerosol parameters and monthly discharges were higher than 0.7 in the northeastern region during the Super El Niño. These positive correlations, which have been widely reported in previous studies, were explained considering the vegetation cover, consisting mainly of subtropical forests in the northeastern region of SSA, and the increase in rainfall during El Niño in this area in spring and summer. The increases in AOD and AE during latter spring and summer in the northeastern region were therefore related to the release of biological aerosols and to aerosols emission mechanisms independent of the background aerosol concentration, respectively. The increase in lightning activity was related to the role of these released aerosols as ice nuclei particles and/or as cloud condensation nuclei, affecting cloud properties and thus the lightning activity. The results reported in this work show the effect of the Super El Niño on aerosol and lightning activity and, in this way on aerosol-cloud interactions.

Health effects of exposure to urban ambient particulate matter: A spatial-statistical study on 3rd-trimester pregnant women

Pregnant women are highly vulnerable to environmental stressors such as ambient particulate matter (PM). Particularly during their 3rd trimester, their bodies undergo significant oxidative stresses. To further consolidate this dialogue into practice, the current study evaluated healthy pregnant women (n = 150 housewives; 18–40 years old; gestation age >36 weeks) from the highly polluted city of Yazd, Iran, from September to November 2021. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) data retrieved from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were employed as influencing variables and validated using field-collected PM10 data (r = 0.62, p-value <0.01). The links between blood platelet count, enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, LDH, bilirubin), metabolic products (urea and acid uric) and different combinations of AOD data were assessed using the Generalized Additive Model. The results showed a high temporal variability in AOD (0.94 ± 0.51) but a spatially stable distribution pattern. The mean AOD during the 3rd trimester, followed by that of the three-month peak, were identified as the most significant non-linear predictors, while the mean AOD during the 1st trimester and throughout the entire pregnancy showed no significant associations with any of the biomarkers. Considering the associations found between AOD variables and maternal oxidative stresses, urgent planning is required to improve the urban air quality for sensitive subpopulations.

Analysis of Aerosol Types and Vertical Distribution in Seven Typical Cities in East Asia

Identifying the types and vertical distribution of aerosols plays a significant role in evaluating the influence of aerosols on the climate system. Based on the aerosol optical properties obtained from Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO), this study analyzed the long-term aerosol characteristics of seven cities in East Asia (Ulaanbaatar, Beijing, Lanzhou, Shanghai, Lhasa, Hong Kong, and Bangkok) from 2007 to 2021, including the spatiotemporal variations of aerosol optical depth (AOD), the vertical stratification characteristics of aerosols, and the main aerosol subtype. The results showed that, except for Lhasa, the AOD values of all cities exhibited a trend of initially increasing and then decreasing over the years. Except for Shanghai, the high values of AOD in the other cities occurred in the spring and summer seasons, while the low values occurred in the autumn and winter seasons. In all four seasons, the AOD contribution within the 1–3 km range accounted for more than 50% of the total. In the autumn and winter seasons, this proportion reached over 80%. The main types of aerosols and their contributions varied at different altitudes. Overall, dust, polluted continental/smoke, polluted dust, and elevated smoke dominated in all aerosol layers across each city. On the other hand, clean marine, clean continental, and dusty marine had very small proportions, accounting for less than 5% of all the cities’ aerosol layers.

Relationship between El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Atmospheric Aerosols in the Legal Amazon

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) stands out as the most significant tropical phenomenon in terms of climatic magnitude resulting from ocean–atmosphere interaction. Due to its atmospheric teleconnection mechanism, ENSO influences various environmental variables across distinct atmospheric scales, potentially impacting the spatiotemporal distribution of atmospheric aerosols. Within this context, this study aims to evaluate the relationship between ENSO and atmospheric aerosols across the entire Legal Amazon during the period from 2006 to 2011. Over this five-year span, four ENSO events were identified. Concurrently, an analysis of the spatiotemporal variability of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Black Carbon radiation extinction (EAOD-BC) was conducted alongside these ENSO events, utilizing data derived from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), MERRA-2 model, and ERSSTV5. Employing the Windowed Cross-Correlation (WCC) approach, statistically significant phase lags of up to 4 to 6 months between ENSO indicators and atmospheric aerosols were observed. There was an approximate 100% increase in AOD immediately after El Niño periods, particularly during intervals encompassing the La Niña phase. The analysis of specific humidity anomaly (QA) revealed that, contrary to expectations, positive values were observed throughout most of the El Niño period. This result suggests that while there is a suppression of precipitation events during El Niño due to the subsidence of drier air masses in the Amazon, the region still exhibits positive specific humidity (Q) conditions. The interaction between aerosols and humidity is intricate. However, Q can exert influence over the microphysical and optical properties of aerosols, in addition to affecting their chemical composition and aerosol load. This influence primarily occurs through water absorption, leading to substantial alterations in radiation scattering characteristics, and thus affecting the extinction of solar radiation.

Factors Influencing the Spatio–Temporal Variability of Aerosol Optical Depth over the Arid Region of Northwest China

Aerosol optical depth (AOD) is an important physical variable used to characterize atmospheric turbidity for the management and control of air pollution. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the spatial and temporal variability in AOD across the arid region of Northwest China (ARNC) using MODIS Aqua C006 aerosol product data from 2008 to 2017. In terms of natural and socioeconomic factors, the correlation coefficient (R) was used to identify the most influential factor in the AOD changes. The results show that AOD values in spring and summer were much higher than those in autumn and winter, especially in spring. In general, AOD had an insignificant decreasing trend, with a small overall changing range. Spatial analysis revealed a significantly decreasing trend, mostly across the Gobi Desert area, which is located in the western region of the ARNC. From the perspective of natural factors, AOD was positively correlated with air temperature (AT), wind speed (WP), land surface temperature (LST), and the digital elevation model (DEM) and negatively correlated with precipitation, relative humidity (RH), and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The greatest positive correlation, with a maximum R value of 0.8, was found between AOD and wind speed. By contrast, AOD and relative humidity had the strongest negative correlation, with R values of −0.77. In terms of anthropogenic factors, gross domestic product (GDP), secondary industry, and population density were the three major anthropogenic factors that influenced the changes in AOD changes in this region. In general, the effects of anthropogenic factors on AOD are more significant in areas with high urban population densities.

Long-term validation and error analysis of DB and MAIAC aerosol products over bright surface of China

Two distinct algorithms, namely Deep Blue (DB) and Multiangle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC), based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), can provide aerosol optical depth (AOD) products over bright surfaces. Recently, the newest MAIAC Collection 6.1 (C6.1) product was available, which corrected many known deficiencies of C6. Due to the significant impact of high-reflectivity surfaces on the accuracy of aerosol retrieval, long-term validation and comprehensive assessment of AOD over bright surfaces are required at a regional scale. Firstly, this study conducted a systematic evaluation of three products against ground-based Sunphotometer data obtained from 21 sites of the China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network (CARSNET) and 2 sites of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) from the year 2002 to 2014. The validation results showed a significant underestimation in DB and MAIAC AOD retrievals as indicated by the large percent of retrievals below the expected error (EE) envelope, and significant negative biases. In comparison, both versions of MAIAC products performed better than DB product, which was also revealed by the site scale validation. Besides, the performance of the C6.1 MAIAC was slightly improved over the study region compared to the C6 MAIAC. Finally, this study made an in-depth investigation of the underestimation of AOD products affected by various factors, i.e., aerosol loading, land type, NDVI, surface albedo, and scattering angle. The results indicated that the large negative bias of AOD retrievals for the three products tended to occur in the case of large aerosol loadings and high bright surfaces, which could be attributed to the inaccurate assumption of aerosol models and the insensitivity of top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance to AOD variations caused by the high reflectivity of the underlying surface. The findings of this study are expected to provide some reference for the improvement of aerosol retrieval algorithms over bright surfaces.

Spatiotemporal Variations in Summertime Arctic Aerosol Optical Depth Caused by Synoptic‐Scale Atmospheric Circulation in Three Reanalyses

AbstractAtmospheric aerosol affects the radiation budget, cloud cover and properties, and surface albedo of sea ice and snow over the Arctic with obvious climatological significance. However, observations are scarce and have large uncertainties. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) variability in the Arctic and its relationship with atmospheric disturbances on synoptic timescales were investigated on the basis of the JRAero, CAMSRA, and MERRA2 reanalyses. Total AODs of the three reanalyses were spatiotemporally consistent in summer, although contributions of individual aerosol species differed. Summertime AOD variability was strongly correlated with observations in all reanalyses. The predominance of organic carbon aerosol indicates that aerosols are derived mainly from biomass burning over northern Eurasia and northern North America. Differences in composites of atmospheric fields between high‐ and low‐loading days indicate that locations of synoptic disturbances are related to high‐AOD events in the Arctic. Furthermore, empirical orthogonal function analysis indicates that the first‐ and second‐largest AOD variabilities in synoptic timescales occur over northern Eurasia. This AOD variability is related to two different types of Arctic cyclone, the development of which is important in aerosol transport, aging, and deposition in summer.

Diurnal time representation of MODIS, VIIRS, MISR, and AHI over Asia and Oceania

Retrievals of satellite aerosol optical depth (AOD) products are used for studies of air pollution, energy balance, and climate change. However, few studies have evaluated the diurnal time representation (DTR) of satellite AOD products. In this study, we proposed a statistically valid threshold method to investigate the DTR of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), and Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) AOD products by comparing their retrievals to the daily AERONET AOD values and explored the ability of AHI and AERONET to capture daily aerosol variability at 54 sites in Asia and Oceania from July 2015 to December 2019. For polar-orbiting satellites, based on collocations with AERONET measurements, MISR-derived AOD showed high consistency with daily average AERONET AOD, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.94 and 80.85% matchups falling into the envelopes of expected error (EE, ± (0.05 + 0.15 × AODAERONET)). Compared with single MODIS products, a combination of satellite data from the Terra and Aqua MODIS dark target (DT) algorithm might obtain a dataset with better DTR (R = 0.94 and %Within EE = 72.10). The satellite-retrieved AOD did a good job to represent the daily mean AERONET AOD, because AERONET AOD averaged within a ± 30 min time window of different satellite overpasses closely mirrored the daily mean AERONET AOD. Furthermore, the seasonal average diurnal variations (SADV) of AERONET AOD were changing insignificant, except for the urban coverage area in the Southern Hemisphere and equatorial climate. For geostationary satellite, the DTR of AHI was relatively poorer in comparison to the other sensors (R = 0.84, %Within EE = 58.00), and AHI AOD was seriously underestimated in South Asia and overestimated in Oceania. Besides, the SADVs of AHI AOD presented several patterns summarized as wave type, unimodal type, stable fluctuation type, and other types, which meant that AHI AOD retrievals did not accurately capture the diurnal variability of aerosols. This study provides a reference for the aerosol community to select satellite AOD products with appropriate DTR.

Aerosol optical depth climatology from the high-resolution MAIAC product over Europe: differences between major European cities and their surrounding environments

Abstract. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) is a derived measurement useful to investigate the aerosol load and its distribution at different spatio-temporal scales. In this work we use long-term (2000–2021) MAIAC (Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction) retrievals with 1 km resolution to investigate the climatological AOD variability and trends at different scales in Europe: a continental (30–60∘ N, 20∘ W–40∘ E), a regional (100 × 100 km2) and an urban–local scale (3 × 3 km2). The AOD climatology at the continental scale shows the highest values during summer (JJA) and the lowest during winter (DJF) seasons. Regional and urban–local scales are investigated for 21 cities in Europe, including capitals and large urban agglomerations. Analyses show AOD average (550 nm) values between 0.06 and 0.16 at the urban–local scale while also displaying a strong north–south gradient. This gradient corresponds to a similar one in the European background, with higher AOD being located over the Po Valley, the Mediterranean Basin and eastern Europe. Average enhancements of the local with respect to regional AOD of 57 %, 55 %, 39 % and 32 % are found for large metropolitan centers such as Barcelona, Lisbon, Paris and Athens, respectively, suggesting a non-negligible enhancement of the aerosol burden through local emissions. Negative average deviations are observed for other cities, such as Amsterdam (−17 %) and Brussels (−6 %), indicating higher regional background signal and suggesting a heterogeneous aerosol spatial distribution that conceals the urban–local signal. Finally, negative statistically significant AOD trends for the entire European continent are observed. A stronger decrease rate at the regional scale with respect to the local scale occurs for most of the cities under investigation.

Aerosol optical depth variations in Delhi and Lucknow over a period of 10-year (2013-2022)

This research paper focuses upon descriptive analysis of the variation in Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) over a duration of ten years (from 01-01-2013 to 01-01-2023) for Delhi and Lucknow cities. Higher values were found throughout the winter and lower values were found during the monsoon season in both cities, according to a study of monthly AOD data. Compared to Delhi, Lucknow typically had slightly higher AOD readings, with noticeable variability in certain months. We found that for Lucknow the AOD levels ranges from 0.55 in March to 1.07 in January, on the other hand for Delhi the AOD values ranges from 0.60 in March to 0.96 in June. Seasonal study revealed differing trends, with Delhi's AOD levels being higher in the summer but somewhat equivalent to those of the winter, with the exception of the winter of 2019 when AOD exceeded one. AOD readings in Lucknow were typically higher in the winter, however there have been some instances in the summer and autumn of 2018 and 2019 when they were higher than average. Complementing these findings, a statistical analysis using the t-test method was also carried out which suggests that when considering the overall period under study, there wasn't a substantial difference in air quality between Delhi and Lucknow. Our study points out what is the importance of understanding the patterns of aerosol in both the cities (i.e., Delhi and Lucknow) in order to evaluate the air quality and might be helpful in mitigating negative environmental effects of aerosols. It also provides valuable information on the geographical and temporal variability of AOD.

Evaluation and Comparison of Multi-Satellite Aerosol Optical Depth Products over East Asia Ocean.

The atmosphere over the ocean is an important research field that involves multiple aspects such as climate change, atmospheric pollution, weather forecasting, and marine ecosystems. It is of great significance for global sustainable development. Satellites provide a wide range of measurements of marine aerosol optical properties and are very important to the study of aerosol characteristics over the ocean. In this study, aerosol optical depth (AOD) data from seventeen AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) stations were used as benchmark data to comprehensively evaluate the data accuracy of six aerosol optical thickness products from 2013 to 2020, including MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectrometer), VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite), MISR (Multi-Angle Imaging Spectrometer), OMAERO (OMI/Aura Multi-wavelength algorithm), OMAERUV (OMI/Aura Near UV algorithm), and CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation) in the East Asian Ocean. In the East Asia Sea, VIIRS AOD products generally have a higher correlation coefficient (R), expected error within ratio (EE within), lower root mean square error (RMSE), and median bias (MB) than MODIS AOD products. The retrieval accuracy of AOD data from VIIRS is the highest in spring. MISR showed a higher EE than other products in the East Asian Ocean but also exhibited systematic underestimation. In most cases, the OMAERUV AOD product data are of better quality than OMAERO, and OMAERO overestimates AOD throughout the year. The CALIPSO AOD product showed an apparent underestimation of the AOD in different seasons (EE Below = 58.98%), but when the AOD range is small (0 < AOD < 0.1), the CALIPSO data accuracy is higher compared with other satellite products under small AOD range. In the South China Sea, VIIRS has higher data accuracy than MISR, while in the Bohai-Yellow Sea, East China Sea, Sea of Japan, and the western Pacific Ocean, MISR has the best data accuracy. MODIS and VIIRS show similar trends in R, EE within, MB, and RMSE under the influence of AOD, Angstrom exponent (AE), and precipitable water. The study on the temporal and spatial distribution of AOD in the East Asian Ocean shows that the annual variation of AOD is different in different sea areas, and the ocean in the coastal area is greatly affected by land-based pollution. In contrast, the AOD values in the offshore areas are lower, and the aerosol type is mainly clean marine type aerosol. These findings can help researchers in the East Asian Ocean choose the most accurate and reliable satellite AOD data product to better study atmospheric aerosols' impact and trends.

Spatiotemporal Variations of Aerosol Optical Depth and the Spatial Heterogeneity Relationship of Potential Factors Based on the Multi-Scale Geographically Weighted Regression Model in Chinese National-Level Urban Agglomerations

Investigating the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and its driving factors is essential for assessing atmospheric environmental quality and alleviating air pollution. Based on a 22-year high-resolution AOD dataset, the spatiotemporal variations of AOD in mainland China and ten national urban agglomerations were explored based on the Mann–Kendall trend test and Theil–Sen median method. Random forest (RF) and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) were combined to identify the main driving factors of AOD in urban agglomerations and to reveal the spatial heterogeneity of influencing factors. The results showed that areas with high annual average AOD concentrations were mainly concentrated in the Chengdu–Chongqing, Central Plains, Shandong Peninsula, and Middle Yangtze River urban agglomerations. Southern Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei and its surrounding areas revealed the highest AOD pollution during summer, whereas the worst pollution during the remaining three seasons occurred in the Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomeration. Temporally, except for the Ha-Chang and Mid-Southern Liaoning urban agglomerations, where the average annual AOD increased, the other urban agglomerations showed a decreasing trend. Among them, the Central Plains, Middle Yangtze River, Guanzhong Plain, and Yangtze River Delta urban agglomerations all exhibited a decline greater than 20%. According to the spatial trends, most urban agglomerations encompassed much larger areas of decreasing AOD values than areas of increasing AOD values, indicating that the air quality in most areas has recently improved. RF analysis revealed that PM2.5 was the dominant factor in most urban clusters, followed by meteorological factors. MGWR results show that the influencing factors have different spatial scale effects on AOD in urban agglomerations. The socioeconomic factors and PM2.5 showed strong spatial non-stationarity with regard to the spatial distribution of AOD. This study can provide a comprehensive understanding of AOD differences among urban agglomerations, and it has important theoretical and practical implications for improving the ecological environment and promoting sustainable development.

Influence of synoptic weather on aerosol variability over East Asia: Present and future

Aerosol variability is influenced by changes in emissions and atmospheric dynamics. The aim of this study is to identify the role of synoptic weather systems in affecting the aerosol variation over East Asia under future changes in atmospheric dynamics. First we investigate the influence of synoptic weather on aerosol optical depth (AOD) spatiotemporal variability using long-term observations from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). We demonstrate that the major synoptic weather patterns of each season are among the dominant factors that affect AOD variations. During spring and autumn, AOD variability is significantly influenced by dynamic transport under northeasterly (winter monsoon) or southwesterly (summer monsoon) conditions. In summer, the maximum anomaly of the AOD variability was associated with the occurrence of fronts and tropical cyclones near Taiwan. While in winter, cold surge was the major event controlling the AOD variability. As atmospheric dynamics are well connected with AOD interannual variability, the AOD predictability over East Asia is associated with the predictability of synoptic weather systems. We apply the high-resolution atmospheric model (HiRAM) to identify these weather systems in present climate and under future warming scenarios. Under future climate based on HiRAM, the occurrence of summer tropical cyclones decreases by 32%, and the autumn southwesterly pattern increases by 50%. Considering the frequency change in summer tropical cyclones and autumn southwestlies under future scenarios, this may lead to the accumulation of AOD over China during summer and autumn through dynamic transport. The results suggest that AOD variations in East Asia may change along with future changes in the large-scale circulation under global warming.

Spatiotemporal changes of aerosol optical depth and its response to urbanization: a case study of Jinan City, China, 2009-2018.

With the insidiously growing impact of urban development on the environment, the issue of air quality has attracted extensive attention nationally and globally. It is of great significance to study the influence of urbanization on air quality for the rational development of cities. MODIS-MAIAC (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer-Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction) Aerosol optical depth (AOD) product, DMSP/OLS (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System) and NPP/VIIRS (Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) night-light were used to explore the spatiotemporal variation and correlation between AOD and urbanization development before and after the promulgation of environmental governance policies in Jinan City from 2009 to 2018. Results show that (1) the spatial distribution of AOD in Jinan had the characteristics of high in the north and low in the south, high in the west and low in the east, and low in some parts of the central region; there was a significant seasonal variation in time, with the highest AOD in summer and the lowest in winter. During 2009-2013, the annual average variation of AOD increased by 20.6%, while during 2014-2018, it decreased by 35.3%; (2) The distribution of night-light in Jinan City has progressively expanded, mirroring the city's ongoing development. The spatial distribution of aerosols in urban areas was relatively low compared to the surrounding areas of the city. (3) From 2009 to 2013, there existed a significant positive correlation between the spatial and temporal distribution of AOD and night-light. However, from 2014 to 2018, with the implementation of environmental governance policies, this relationship shifted to a significant negative correlation between the spatial and temporal distribution of AOD and night-light. Through an analysis of the correlation between urban development and aerosol depth in Jinan City over the past decade, it can be concluded that urban development does not inevitably result in elevated AOD levels. Notably, the Jinan government has achieved remarkable results in controlling the atmospheric environment, as evidenced by recent years' improvements.

A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SPATIO-TEMPORAL VARIATION OF SATELLITE-BASED AEROSOL OPTICAL DEPTH IN MARMARA REGION OF TURKIYE DURING 2000–2021

Abstract. This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the atmosphere over the Marmara region, Turkiye. Long-term satellite observations from MODIS MAIAC AOD data spanning the period from 2000 to 2021 are utilized. Examining the temporal variations in AOD in the Marmara region, it is observed that AOD reaches its peak during spring (May) and summer (August) months, while lower AOD values are observed in winter. Specifically, between August and December, there is a significant decline in monthly mean AOD which is majorly due to particulate removal from the atmosphere via precipitation scavenging. The findings reveal that the inter-annual variability of monthly AOD variations in the Marmara region is primarily influenced by temporary Saharan dust transportation with highest deviations from 22 year averaged AOD in late winters and early springs. The findings from the analysis of seasonal spatial variation of high AOD values revealed that the high AOD area is largest in the summer with about 54% of the total area and then spring (45%) and autumn (26%). Winter has the lowest HVA with 17% of the total area. The seasonal percentage rates of HVA are due to atmospheric conditions and aerosol sources. Larger HVA in summer is due to the increase of farming practices and biomass residue burnings combined with high moisture absorption effects and high temperature. The heating-specific emissions are the main source of anthropogenic emissions over the high AOD areas during the autumn and winter and aerosols are concentrated over the urbanized centres and industrialized zones.

A comprehensive reappraisal of long-term aerosol characteristics, trends, and variability in Asia

Abstract. Changes in aerosol loadings and properties are important for the understanding of atmospheric environment and climate change. This study investigates the characteristics and long-term trends of aerosols of different sizes and types in Asia from 2000 to 2020 by considering multi-source aerosol data and novel analysis methods and perspectives, all of which provides the groundwork for promoting the acquisition of new discoveries that are different from the past. The geometric mean aggregation method is applied, and serial autocorrelation is considered to avoid the overestimation of trend significance. Among regions in Asia, high values of aerosol optical depth (AOD) are mainly concentrated in East Asia (EA) and South Asia (SA) and are closely related to the population density. The AOD in EA showed the most significant negative trend, with a value of -5.28×10-4 per year, mainly owing to decreases in organic carbon (OC), black carbon (BC), and dust aerosols. It is also worth noting that this observed large-scale decrease in OC and BC is a unique and significant phenomenon to region of EA and mainly around China. In contrast, the aerosol concentrations in SA generally show a positive trend, with an increased value of AOD of 1.25 × 10−3 per year. This increase is mainly due to large emissions of fine-mode aerosols, such as OC and sulfate aerosol. Additionally, the high aerosol loading in northern SA has a lower AOD variability when compared with that of East China Plain, revealing a relatively more persistent air pollution situation. Over the whole region of Asia, the characteristics of the percentage changes in different types of AOD are seen in the increases in BC (6.23 %) and OC (17.09 %) AOD, together with a decrease in dust (−5.51 %), sulfate (−3.07 %), and sea salt (−9.80 %) AOD. Except for anthropogenic emissions, the large increase in the percentage of OC is also due to wildfires found in northern Asia in the summer, whereas the differently sized AOD only shows slight changes in Asia in that small-sized AOD decreases (−3.34 %) and that the total AOD did not show a significant change. This suggests that, from a trend perspective, decreases in aerosol in recent years have mostly been offsetting earlier increases in the anthropogenic emissions over Asia. To summarize, the above findings analyse the comprehensive characteristics of aerosol distributions and reappraise the long-term trends of different aerosol parameters, which will greatly enhance the understanding of regional and global aerosol environment and climatology, in addition to filling the gaps and breaking through the limitations of past knowledge.
